Project "ArtBloc"

We are building a totally mobile art gallery/space & performance venue from joining together two 20ft shipping containers.
ArtBloc

Each container will have 3 full-height openings on each side, and the openings will have full size pop-in/out windows, to close off, or open up the containers - and also so we can connect them together in different configurations, according to use.

We can use the ArtBloc as an enclosed gallery, or opened up to be a performance space, - a venue for punk rock, string quartets, hip hop - whatever! Maybe as a small retail store, or even as a temporary kitchen for cooking exhibitions.

The ArtBloc can also be a sculpture unto itself - or used as a surface for art. We will be moving them to different locations, like abandoned lots in neighborhoods that don't have any galleries or performance spaces - so we can use them for "Pop-up" artspaces. The idea is also expandable - in the future we want to get more containers and maybe have them in different locations simultaneously - or group (or stack) a bunch of them together - depending on the particular use.

Any and all ideas welcome - no matter how weird or crazy (actually the weirder the better)!

The first location - this summer 2011 - will be Marina 59 in Far Rockaway NY, two blocks from the "A" Train, and a few more blocks to the gorgeous Rockaway beach. We'll be building a slot-in attached stage, using old boat sails to shade and decorate the space, and we'll be using as much recycled materials as possible. Eventually we'd like to run it off solar power.

The ArtBloc can be an art space, a performance venue & a sculpture itself.

Watch this space for more developments!
